Default [TuT] Using the basics of Modio with Xbox Game Saves

Tutorial of basic functions in Modio.

Modio needs .net 3.5 and above to work corrently.
NOTE: If you have Windows 7 you should try updating your software using Window Update before trying this because simple updating can resolve issues within Modio.

Download and install the .NET framework from these: .NET 3.5 (SP1: HERE SP2: HERE for Vista or Redistrabution: HERE or .NET 4.0
Warning: You will need to reboot your PC afterwards so the changes can take effect

Firstly installing Modio into the shell of your computer is a helpful way to quickly open any saves on your PC that have already been Extracted.

    Main tutorial:

    1. How to Open a device and what you should see.
When opening a device there is several programs to extract saves, profiles or DLC content and the one I'm showing you is for everything on your USB device using Modio 4.0
    Spoiler:
Open Modio - Run as Admin if you don't see anything by normally running Modio
Click: Explore my Device your see all the files on your USB like this:

    2. Finding the content to Extract.
It is simply a case on looking and understanding where the folder is that contains the save.
    Spoiler:
After step 1 you should be able to go in and out of various folders.
Find the folder that contains your content (I am using Gears of War as a demonstration)
Right click the file in the folder and select Extract:

Save this to your desktop or a folder

Once you done that it should be on your desktop or in that folder and you will only be able to open it using Modio or right clicking and clicking Open with Modio after you have installed it to your shell in the paragraph before the Main tutorial.

    3. Opening an Extracted saves to get main data of the save.
When it is stored on Xbox is shows as 1 file but if you where to extract the data part of it using a PC you can transfer some games save between PC and Xbox 360. This is how:
    Spoiler:
You now have a file you can Open in Modio and edit or Rehash & Resign with new ID's
To Open within Modio select 'Open a Save' from the main list.

(Now here's where it's the same for both versions of opening a save.)
If you right click and Open with Modio from the desktop or folder your see the same window as this. (whether you have 'Opened within' Modio or 'Right Click' on the saved file then your see this window)

Extracting the Disc Icon is simply the data from the shell the Xbox uses and this is what will work on the PC version with a file name change (a simple change from .ess (file extension) to .exs (file extension) can make them work for some PC version of the same game but others may require more in-depth process before they work so research this first)

    Hope this helps.

You might be having problems because you don't have the .NET required and try installing the SP1 to your version of 3.5 can help to. If your using Windows XP your need to have Service Pack 3 installed.
    SP3 for XP Info:
    Spoiler:
DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download is now available on Windows Update. The best way to ensure you get Windows XP Service Pack 3 is by turning on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP. You can use our step-by-step instructions or, if you prefer, let us do it for you.

Download from here otherwise: Download: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

Side note: Appon helping someone today I see some people who have shared modded gamesaves with incorrect file extention. For example say you had a file that was 'xxxxxxxxx.mcs' and for the save to work it should be something else like 'xxxxxxxxx.bin' (Minecraft save). To establish if this is the case with your modded save you need to save a normal save on that game and compare the '.[file-extention]' of both saves. The game can't find let alone read it if they are different from the normal file extention the game uses.

Good post OP, I'm sure this will help all Modio newbies (who actually do some research on the forums first).

I wanted to help some other users that where having trouble trying to extract & convert a Xbox Gamesave to use on a PC version and thought it would help even more if I posted the TuT to.

Modio is for Xbox 360 not PS3, ask for help in the PS3 forums.

I have added a side note to this to help with file extention issues.

Side note: Appon helping someone today I see some people who have shared modded gamesaves with incorrect file extention. For example say you had a file that was 'xxxxxxxxx.mcs' and for the save to work it should be something else like 'xxxxxxxxx.bin' (Minecraft save).
